Design Director Berlin (f/m/x)

We are looking for a Design Director in Berlin to co-create transformational businesses by working on complex and inspiring projects in mobility, health, energy and other fields to develop innovative products and services. As a Design Director, you will be co-leading the Berlin design team and defining and orchestrating the agency’s design practice in the German market with the other Design Directors (Munich and Stuttgart) and the Design Principals.

You will be working closely with our Design Directors/Design Principals in Germany, focusing on two equally important aspects:

Nurture and Grow Design Team & Competence

  • Develop the design team including design capabilities (skills, methods) and people capabilities (client relationship management, communication, team leadership)
  • Co-create the hiring plan for Design Germany and participate in the hiring process for designers in Germany
    Participating in the staffing process for designers in Germany
  • Demonstrate leadership with client and colleague engagements
    Ensure professional development and competence of design team members to be equipped for future projects

Client Work & Business Development

  • Lead & participate in 1 or 2 project works (has to fulfill certain criteria; the project helps to build a new client relationship or to extend current key account relationships or offers a strong role modelling/learning opportunity)
  • Ensure satisfaction of design team members in the project
  • Drive organic growth through identifying business development opportunities with key clients
  • Demonstrate design expertise in all client interactions, to position the business to capitalise on new and existing opportunities
  • Lead development and delivery of value proposition to drive new business opportunities (e.g. pitches)
  • Be a leading voice and advocate of our design competence through personal and professional platforms

Not only will you be a thought leader for the design community but you will also have an excellent opportunity to oversee various innovative projects and to be the c-suite design contact for our strategic accounts.

Your Responsibilities

  • Being responsible for a well-functioning design team in Berlin and its contribution to Germany’s (and global) value creation through excellent design delivery
  • Supporting the Design Team in Germany, to continuously improve the overall competencies to be equipped for future projects and evolve the design standards and best practices
  • Hiring and developing the design team
  • Providing vision and inspirational leadership to empower and motivate the design team and deliver high standards
  • Act as a coach & mentor for Design Team members to enable them to be the best version of themselves at work
  • Leading the design operations, supported by other design leaders and related competencies
  • Aligning the design competence in conjunction with Futurice industry experts and leaders of specialist fields such as “Intelligent Services and Ecosystems” or “Data-enabled, Innovative Organisations”
  • Engaging with clients to understand their needs through interpreting their abstract business concepts and project briefs to develop strategic design plans within projected timelines and budgets
  • Being a strong point of contact for our business development team and driving new client acquisition
  • Building strong relationships with clients and colleagues through your presence at the client’s premises and at Futurice offices

Your Profile

  • At least 3 years of substantial work experience in the German market in a design leadership position
  • Fluent in current design practices in the field of digital product design, service design & research or strategic foresight & business design
  • Extensive experience in the agency/consulting sector, e.g. in working closely with clients maintaining and building strategic relationships and increasing the impact and value of design
  • Excellent German communication skills
  • Willingness to travel to other Futurice locations and client sites
